Dental check-up

What is a dental check-up?

A regular dental check-up is essential in order to maintain good dental and oral health. At Court Street Dental Centre we are on hand to quickly and effectively examine your mouth and jaw, as well as address any particular concerns you may have.

What happens during a dental check-up appointment?
If you are a new patient, we will start by asking you some questions to get an idea of your oral and dental health, and you will also be required to fill out a medical history questionnaire.

There are generally four parts to the dental check-up.
Oral examination:

We will examine the outside and inside of your mouth and jaw, fully taking into account your teeth, tongue, cheeks and the roof and floor of your mouth. Your bite will also be examined.

Gums

We will assess the health of your gums to check for any signs of gum disease.

Teeth cleaning

Depending on the condition of your teeth, we may recommend teeth cleaning with our Dental Hygienist as part of your dental check-up to remove any excess plaque or tartar. This would require a separate appointment.

X-ray

If required we will conduct an x-ray at your first appointment to check if there is any underlying decay present. We may also want to conduct an x-ray as part of your routine dental check-up to better assess tooth and bone structure, along with existing restorations such as fillings.

What happens during a dental check-up appointment?

It is not enough to simply brush and floss your teeth in order to maintain good oral and dental health. Generally, our dentists will want to see you at least once a year for to examine your oral and dental health and assess any issues that may develop if left untreated, such as tooth loss, gum disease and oral cancer.

It is important that you tell us about any pain or unusual changes in your mouth, such as excess bleeding, soreness, tooth discoloration or mouth sores that do not heal. Similarly, we should know if you have made any lifestyle changes since we saw you last, including any new disease diagnoses, allergies or whether you are pregnant.

Options Available
We will advise on the best way for you to maintain good oral and dental health at home, depending on your requirements. Likewise, we can advise if any further treatments are needed, such as orthodontics or fillings.

If you qualify for PRSI entitlements, you can avail of an annual examination, scale and polish for only €15. With your PPS number and date of birth, we would be happy to check and see if you are eligible. If you have a valid medical card, you can avail of a free annual examination also.
